Privacy Policy

Rate My Professor ("the App"), operated by AceMedia, is used by verified students to rate lecturers and universities, browse campus events and posts, and vote in polls. This policy explains what information we collect from you and your device, why we collect it, and how it's used.

Information We Collect

When you register and use the App, we collect:

  • Account information: your institutional email address, and password (stored hashed, never in plain text).
  • Profile information: first and last name, cellphone number, faculty, birthday, ethnicity, home province, and the university/campus you belong to.
  • Device and app information: device name and model, a push-notification token, an app-generated device identifier, app version, and platform (Android/iOS), used to deliver notifications and to correlate support/error reports to a specific app install.
  • Content you submit: lecturer and university ratings, comments (which may be posted anonymously), poll votes, and help/support requests.

How We Use Your Information

  • To create and secure your account, and confirm you're a verified student at a supported institution.
  • To operate core features: displaying ratings, comments, events, posts, and polls.
  • To send push notifications (via Firebase Cloud Messaging) about relevant campus activity.
  • To respond to support/help requests you submit through the App.
  • To maintain the security of the App and diagnose technical issues.

Sharing of Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only with service providers that help us run the App — currently Firebase (Google) for push notifications — and only to the extent necessary for that service. We may disclose information where required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of AceMedia, our users, or the public.

Data Retention

We retain your account and profile information for as long as your account is active. You can request deletion of your account and associated data at any time — see "Your Rights" below.

Your Rights

You can review and update most of your profile information from within the App. You can also request permanent deletion of your account and data at https://professor.acemedia.co.za/delete-account. Depending on your location, you may have additional rights under applicable data protection law — including the right to access, correct, or object to the processing of your personal information — which you can exercise by contacting us below. In South Africa, this processing is governed by the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

Children's Privacy

The App is intended for verified university students and is not directed at children. See our Standards Against Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation for more information.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including password hashing and encrypted transport (HTTPS). No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date.
